Ivanpah fire burning in Mojave National Preserve holding at 80% containment
A fire burning in the Mojave National Preserve is holding at 213 acres and is 80% contained, according to the National Park Service. The fire began on August 7 as a 15-acre vegetation fire with a moderate rate of spread. Air resources have been attacking the fire as it is reported that the area is difficult to access for ground units.
The wildfire is burning east of Cima Road, west of New York Two Mountain and Drum Peak. It is in proximity to the Cima Dome fire that burned over 43,000 acres of Joshua Tree forest and open desert in the Mojave National Preserve in August of 2020, burning an estimated 1.3 million Joshua Trees.
San Bernardino County Fire and the U.S. Forest Service are supporting with crews strengthening the containment lines before handing public updates over to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service.
The Ivanpah Fire is currently holding at 213 acres and is now 80% contained. On Sunday the US Wildland Fire Service reported three engines, one hand crew and one helicopter working on the fire.
