Galaxy Pies hosts their first Artist Conversation this Sunday in Joshua Tree (9/6)
With a decade of pie making to her name, baker and poet Alexandra Martinez recently opened her Galaxy Pies shop at the Shops at Zanny’s in Joshua Tree. Because she was offered so much freedom in the space, Martinez envisioned the pie shop walls doubling as a small gallery space for local artists.
“I kind of always saw that in the back of my mind, and I was able to get it going pretty quickly. We’re trying to focus on local or localish artists who maybe don’t show at other spaces… It’s been really fun to see people coming in not knowing that there’s going to be art in here, then their eyes just zero in on the things that stand out to them on the wall. It’s just been fun to see that happen organically,” said Martinez.
For Sunday’s Artist Conversation, Alexandra will be facilitating the discussion among three artists she recently exhibited, all of whom she met in 2022 during her month-long residency at the Garcia Center for the Arts in San Bernardino.
Yulissa Mendoza explores themes of identity, tradition, and passage of time through her photography and installations that often serve as living archives — honoring familial land, traditions, and personal histories — while constructing romanticized, dreamlike environments that reflect their evolving sense of self.
Lucy J. Sunga is a ceramicist and multimedia artist who uses art to build connections through storytelling, creating opportunities for ongoing collaboration through her ceramic classes in San Bernardino.
Sarah Vasquez is a self-guided printmaker and independent teaching artist, also from San Bernardino, who has developed her practice through community workshops, independent study, and learning directly from other artists outside of traditional academic pathways.
Artist Conversation goes from 4:00-5:00 p.m. this Sunday at Galaxy Pies, located at Shops at Zanny’s on the corner of Twentynine Palms Highway and El Reposo Circle in downtown Joshua Tree. Free and open to the public.
