TWENTYNINE PALMS SHOOTING CALLED AN ATTEMPTED MURDER

A shooting in Twentynine Palms Friday morning is now being called an attempted murder. Two men, a father and son, were injured in the shooting Friday morning at the corner of Hillside and Sunnyvale, just two blocks north of Oasis Elementary School. Investigators say the shooting was a result of an argument between two groups of people that escalated. Gilbert Gonzalez Jr., 26, was shot three times, including twice in the body and one shot that grazed the top of his head. Gilbert Gonzalez Sr., 47, sustained a gunshot wound on the top of his head. The as-yet-unidentified shooter fled before law enforcement arrived; Oasis Elementary School and nearby Twentynine Palms High School were locked down for a short time as a precaution. Gilbert Gonzalez Jr. was flown to Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs, and Gilbert Gonzalez Sr. was taken to another area hospital. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
