Unity Home Thrift Store helps support survivors of domestic violence
The Unity Home is a local organization that provides services and shelter to the victims of domestic violence but they can’t do it without your help. One of the primary fundraising mechanisms is the popular thrift store in Yucca Valley that bears their name. But like many local businesses, the Unity Home Thrift Store gets a lot quieter during peak summer heat.
Unity Home Executive Director Susanna Barnett and Unity Home Education Coordinator Marcos Escalera were guests on a recent episode of the Z107.7 Up Close Show. Barnett spoke with host Gary Daigneault the thrift store’s success and other ways you can support survivors of domestic violence.
Barnettt said “we’re grateful to have our thrift store in Yucca Valley. All the money that we make at the thrift store goes right back into our clients.
“I always say anything, even if it’s $10 is nice. But we could do better. maybe because people don’t go out shopping as much now that it’s hot out. And so we notice that our less, our fall and spring do a little bit better. But we do okay. And the reason is not only monetary.
“It’s also because we get so many donations that we’re able to provide to our clients and our families that I don’t have to come out of pocket. So, you know, household items, because we do have 10 transitional apartments that after they have completed the shelter, they can move in there for two years. And those are fully furnished. So we’re just really grateful that the thrift store provides so much extra stuff for us.”
