Theatre 29 debuts 28th season with two very different productions
Theatre 29’s 2026-27 season begins in September with two weekends of never-before-seen works, this season opener is set to challenge perceptions and inspire imagination.
Kicking off the festivities from September 11 to 13 is the original play “Larry’s Back…” by acclaimed playwright Steve Stajich. Following its sold-out debut at the Santa Monica Playhouse, this intriguing production makes its way to the Morongo Basin. The narrative begins at a dinner party celebrating the expansion of a socially-minded business aimed at supporting single mothers. As Olivia, her husband Larry, and their lawyer Desmond toast to their success, Larry makes a startling announcement before abruptly leaving. This unexpected turn leaves Olivia and Desmond questioning whether Larry’s actions are a prank or something more profound.

Directed by Stajich himself, and featuring performances by Mary Carrig, John Malone, and Frank Wiley, this compelling play delves into the complexities of love amidst personal upheaval.
The following weekend, from September 18 to 20, is something completely different with “The Last 7 Days of Obsidienne Obsurd.” This experimental, multidisciplinary production is the brainchild of the Bay Area drag artist and violist Obsidienne Obsurd.

Combining personal narratives of gender transition and Chinese-American ancestral migration with live chamber music, surrealist theater, and avant-garde costume design, the show is a truly immersive experience. Featuring musical contributions by cellist Christopher Costanza and violinist Debra Fong, this production offers a groundbreaking performance that the Hi Desert has yet to witness.
