Shianne May named new Yucca Valley Animal Care and Control Manager

The Town of Yucca Valley welcomed Shianne May as their new Animal Care and Control Manager.
May brings extensive experience in animal welfare, having served in senior-level roles with multiple local agencies, including Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and Found Animals Registry.
In her new role, she will oversee Animal Care and Control operations, while working closely with staff, partners and residents to support the health and safety of both people and pets throughout Yucca Valley and the Morongo Basin.

May’s hiring comes at a pivotal time for the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter. Over the last year the shelter has faced increased scrutiny from community members and accusations of improper management, as investigated by Z107.7’s Adeline J. Wells.
Former Animal Shelter Manager Doug Smith retired earlier in 2025 amidst accusations of improper euthanasia methods. In 2025 members of the Yucca Valley Town Council have promised additional accountability regarding the animal shelter, and have formed an Animal Shelter Committee that meets once a month.
