Painted Rocks Restoration area in Johnson Valley holds first clean up of 2026 this Saturday (2/28)

The Johnson Valley Neighborhood Watch is holding another trash and graffiti cleanup this Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. out at the Johnson Valley Painted Rocks. The area is right off Highway 247 and is a popular spot for taggers to deface the giant monzogranite boulders, which rival some of the large climbable rock formations in Joshua Tree National Park.

It’s also a popular spot for illegal desert dumping, and it only takes a few volunteers some time outside with some garbage bags to clean it up. There is something immensely satisfying about bringing the desert back to its natural beauty.

The volunteer crew will be picking up garbage from illegal dumpers and painting over tags and graffiti that have popped up since the last clean up event. Even if you can only stop for an hour, every little bit helps. There will be some  equipment on site, but they could always use donations of paint rollers, brushes, garbage bags and other cleanup supplies.

That begins this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. on the east side of Old Woman Springs Road, just past Ghost Road at the giant painted rocks… you can’t miss it!
