New support group for dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease meets every other Wednesday in Yucca Valley

A new support group has launched to help families navigate the unique grief of dementia.

Desert Willow Center for Seniors in Yucca Valley and Liminal Path Creative Counseling Services has announced the launch of a new, free support group dedicated to helping families, caregivers and loved ones process the complex grief associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The group’s first session took place in June, and the group will continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 5 p.m. at the Desert Willow Center for Seniors.

Unlike traditional bereavement, grief associated with dementia often begins long before a loved one passes away. Caregivers frequently experience “anticipatory grief”, mourning the loss of personality, memories and connection while the individual is still physically present. These feelings are entirely normal but can be isolating and difficult to discuss with those who haven’t experienced them firsthand. 

The Dementia support group provides a safe, confidential and peer-led environment where participants can share their experiences, learn coping strategies and connect with others facing similar challenges

The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 5:30 at the Desert Willow Center for Seniors – located at 57088 Twentynine Palms Highway in Yucca Valley.
