MVCSD to discuss Desert Region Fire Safe partnership, park grant, and ongoing litigation at Wednesday meeting (10/21)

For the meeting’s agenda, the Board will discuss a proposed partnership with Desert Region Fire Safe to provide a supplemental emergency-response apparatus and volunteer support at Station 2 under the Morongo Valley Fire Department’s incident command. It’s recommended that the Board approve the proposed partnership in concept and direct staff to return a final MOU for Board approval following Fire Chief, legal, and insurance review.
There will be discussion and possible action regarding California State Parks’ Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program, to fund new parks and recreation opportunities in underserved communities. Staff recommends that the Board direct staff to evaluate District and project eligibility, identify potential park improvements, and return with a proposed grant application for Board consideration.
In ongoing litigation between Morongo Valley Cookie Company owner Christopher Cross and the MVCSD, the Board will receive an update on Special District Risk Management Authority’s $7,500 settlement of Christopher Cross’s alleged personal injury claim arising from the November 23 incident at last year’s Thanksgiving turkey giveaway involving him and Financial Director Johnny Tolbert.
And speaking of that annual turkey giveaway, Operation Gobble Gobble, the Board will review its costs, staffing demands, and community benefits and discuss whether to continue, modify, or possibly discontinue the program.
The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. in Covington Park’s Mesquite Room, open to the public with opportunity for public comment.
