29 Palms Rock Rumble Royale begins today

The 29 Palms Rock Rumble Royale begins Friday night (January 9) in Twentynine Palms. The two day festival features a rock climbing competition inside of Joshua Tree National Park with $11,000 in prize money, along with several events and guest speakers focusing on rock climbing and conservation. Organizer Seth Zaharias discussed the event on a recent episode of the Z107.7 Up Close Show with Gary Daigneault.

Zaharias said, “We decided we wanted to do a bouldering competition with a conservation twist. Effectively, we’re using a rock climbing competition as a tool or a hook to get the youth and to get urban folks excited about conservation of public lands. And last year was an unbelievable hit for a first year event.

“Then our headliner on Friday is Katie Lamb. Katie Lamb is a bit of a zeitgeist right now, arguably one of the strongest female climbers on the planet. There’s a grading scale for rock climbing, and she just became the first woman to climb two V16s in a summer. V16 is a description of the difficulty of the climb. To have her as a headliner on Friday night is a big deal.”

The 29 Palms Rock Rumble Royale begins Friday (January 9) at 5 p.m. at Freedom Plaza in Twentynine Palms. It continues Saturday (January 10).
