MOJAVE DESERT LAND TRUST SEEKING SEED BANK VOLUNTEERS

The Mojave Desert Land Trust created a seed bank 18 months ago to preserve and protect seeds of desert plants. At the Land Trust’s native plant and salvage sale Sunday (October 29), 10 founding members of the seed bank were honored. The seed bank is recruiting volunteers who’d like to be a part of its membership program. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains how you can be a part of this innovative program…
Since March 2016, volunteers have been collecting, cleaning, labeling, and preserving seeds from more than 100 species of Mojave Desert native plants. The Seed Bank works with the Mojave Desert Land Trust to grow plants in the land trust’s nursery, which are then transplanted either into the desert, or sold to desert residents to plant in their landscapes. The Seed Bank is recruiting new members; there are two levels of membership, based on monetary donations, number of seeds collected, or volunteer hours performed at the seed bank.
