Waste Not Morongo Basin needs able-bodied volunteers to off-load a truckload of fresh food boxes into waiting food pantry vehicles. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and meet at the old Joshua Tree Elementary School, 6051 Sunburst on Thursdays, December 10 and 17 at 8 am. The non-profit has been doing this distribution since May with 60 boxes of produce, growing to 1200 boxes in December. More volunteers are needed, the boxes are moved by handing them one by one down the line and into the waiting vehicle. No equipment available. They currently have 24 food pantries receiving the fresh food product and the need just keeps growing. A semi-truck can carry only 1200 boxes; that truckload feeds about 5,000 people each week. Once the truck door is opened—depending upon the number of available volunteers—it takes about 1.5 hours to offload. The organization needs 25 volunteers.
