Waste Not Morongo Basin needs able-bodied volunteers to offload a truckload of fresh food boxes into waiting food pantry vehicles. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes, and meet at the old Joshua Tree Elementary School, 6051 Sunburst Ave, every Thursday at 8 a.m.
The non-profit has been doing this food distribution since May 2020 starting with 60 boxes of produce. By December, the need for food had grown to 1,200 boxes, which is a full semi-truck. That truckload of food feeds about 5,000 people each week. Waste Not Morongo Basin delivers the fresh food boxes to 24 food pantries in the Morongo Basin, and the need just keeps growing.
More volunteers are needed to move the boxes off the truck. The boxes are moved by handing them one-by-one down the line and into waiting vehicles. Once the door is opened, and depending upon the number of available volunteers, it takes about 1.5 hours to off-load the food boxes. They need 25 volunteers.
