Stolen car races through Joshua Tree residential neighborhood, resulting in foot chase and arrest

A man was arrested after allegedly driving a stolen car recklessly through a residential neighborhood.

On Thursday (July 24) at around 10:10 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Sunnyslope Drive near Copper Mountain Community College in Joshua Tree.

The Sheriff’s Department says they initiated a license plate check and the car had come up as stolen, and that’s when the driver initiated a pursuit where he hit high speeds and drove recklessly through residential neighborhoods.

The driver was identified as 48 year-old Jason Benstead.

Deputies say Benstead eventually stopped near the area of Sun Mesa and Cascade Road in Joshua Tree where he fled the vehicle on foot but was quickly taken into custody.

Jason Benstead was arrested for investigation into being in possession of a stolen vehicle and evading law enforcement with disregard for public safety, and is being held at the West Valley Detention Center on $50,000 bail.
