Landers couple arrested for investigation into felony elder abuse and grand theft
Two Landers residents under investigation for a violent robbery were allegedly found with a severely neglected senior in their home.
On April 13, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a robbery near the intersection of Old Woman Springs Road and Lum Lane in Landers. Deputies say that a female victim confronted two suspects who were stealing from her home. Deputies say that the suspects then fled the home, and drove their vehicle into the victim.
Deputies identified the suspects as Wendy McBride, a 62 year-old resident of Landers, and Scott Coffman, a 40 year-old resident of Landers. As part of their investigation, they obtained a warrant to search a home connected with the suspects in the 3000 block of Kickapoo Lane. Deputies visited the home on April 14, and say McBride attempted to flee the home, but was taken into custody. Coffman was also detained without incident. During their search of the home, deputies say they located an 80-year-old woman who was found in a severely compromised condition. Deputies described here as “in a state of extreme neglect, malnourished, without care, and in urgent need of immediate medical intervention.” The elderly victim was transported to High Desert Medical Center for treatment.
Wendy McBride pled no contest to charges of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor grand theft and is currently serving a 60 day sentence.
Scott Coffman pled no contest to misdemeanor charges of grand theft. He is currently out on probation for time served.
