JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK USING FIRE TO PREPARE FOR WILDFIRE SEASON

Each year, vegetation and fire management staff at Joshua Tree National Park begin preparations for California’s wildfire season. Reporter Cassidy Taylor says the project begins this month for two areas of the park…

Wildfires along roadsides can create issues for fire engines attempting to access fire areas and may cut off their exit paths if fire crosses the road. Starting this month (March), park staff will begin the process of removing excess grasses and non-native brush along Black Rock trails and Covington Flats roads for the next 12 weeks, through the end of May. The fuel reduction project will reduce potential flame lengths and fire intensity, improve the effectiveness of trails and roads as a barrier, and protect the Joshua Tree forests and other native vegetation in the event of a wildfire. For more information on the project, contact Jennifer Albrinck at 760-367-5520 or Hannah Schwalbe at 760-367-5555.
