Joshua Tree National Park is seeking an AmeriCorps Scientists-in-Parks Interpretive Assistant (VIP SIP) to support the park’s volunteer program!

This dynamic position will facilitate volunteer service projects and community outreach. The VIP SIP will coordinate and lead volunteer projects focused on native plant restoration, trail maintenance, historic preservation, and habitat recovery. A major focus will be supporting large-scale native planting efforts in fire-affected areas and supporting operations in the park’s native plant nursery.
The VIP SIP will connect the park to its gateway communities by building partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, service organizations, and other local groups. Through outreach and volunteer programming, this position helps expand public participation in conservation and strengthens community connections to public lands.
The VIP SIP will get meaningful hands-on professional experience and contribute to the protection and restoration of the park’s unique landscape. This position is ideal for folks with strong organizational, communication, time-management, public speaking, and planning skills. Experience working in outdoor professions, in the desert, or in event coordination is preferred, but not required. Some college experience is required.
Details:
- Expected workweek is Tuesday – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- 21-week position: start date 10/7/26, last workday 2/20/27
- Office location is at park headquarters 74485 National Park Drive in Twentynine Palms, CA
- No park housing is available – VIP SIP is required to find their own housing
Financial benefits:
- Weekly living allowance: $775.00 per week, fixed rate (pre-tax)
- Relocation allowance: $450.00 (one-time lump sum on first paycheck) (pre-tax)
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $2,817.00 upon successful completion of position (pre-tax)
- Student loan forbearance if applicable (administered by MyAmeriCorps, directly)
- Student loan interest payments if applicable (administered through MyAmeriCorps, directly)
