Thirteen athletes from Twentynine Palms High School advanced from the De Anza League finals to the CIF preliminary track and field meet. Coach Ronda Morton said the top performer of the day was Kerenza Robinson who won the 1600 meter, 800 meter, and 4×400 meter relay, and was shy a single vote for a League MVP. Other De Anza League event champions and All-League first team members are: Ronnie Rondeau in the 300 meter hurdles, Sam Robinson in the 800 meter, Liana Ruiz in the discus, and the girls’ sprint relays: Makya Bullion, Kathy Lazaro, and Acoyah Russ. The Wildcats head to Carpinteria for CIF next Saturday.
Yucca Valley High School swimmers excelled in recent CIF action. Coach Rebecca Pessa congratulated Bryant Pahl for qualifying for CIF in the 100 breaststroke. Olivia Paul qualified in the 100 breaststroke and 50 free; Katherine Kennedy in the 50 free; and the 200- and 400-free relay teams of Olivia, Katherine, Moriah Goddard and Cerena Foy qualified as well. CIF Prelims will be held Wednesday, May 13, at Riverside Community College.
In a spectacular match for DeAnza League High School golf individual finals, and playing in 30 mph winds, Brandon Steffins from Twentynine Palms High School came back from six strokes down at one point to win individual finals and take MVP of the DeAnza league. Coach Grant Whipple said Justin Delarosa finished 13th to take second team all DeAnza League. Steffins will travel to Victoria Falls to compete in first round CIF individual finals Monday.
