The Morongo Basin Healthcare District Board of Directors had a heated meeting last night. Cassidy Zimarik offers this report…
The Morongo Basin Healthcare District Board of Directors met last night for a lengthy meeting.
When the board discussed whether to approve a request for financial support of $50,000 to Waste Not Morongo Basin for a refrigerated storage system from the Feeding Morongo Basin funds, things got little contentious for the board members. The debate revolved around what would feed more residents: directly purchasing the food boxes or buying the storage system. Vala Stults from Waste Not Morongo Basin pointed out that the healthcare district could feed 500 people with the funds while Waste Not receives food for free and to store it would allow the organization to feed up to 1,000 people per week. In the end, the board approved the funding in a 3-2 vote with Directors Bob Armstrong and Joe Sullivan abstaining.
In a report from Feeding Morongo Basin, 18 organizations received financial support for a total of $84,000 distributed to help support the health and wellness of residents in the Morongo Basin by providing food to those who are in need.
In other business, the board approved the conflict of interest code with no changes as required by the County of San Bernardino.
