The documentary traces the evolution of military arts programs from the Army Arts and Crafts Program and the G.I. Bill to the experiences of contemporary soldiers and veterans who have found purpose and recovery through artistic practice.

Featured artists include ceramicist Ehren Tool, a Marine veteran of the Gulf War who has hand-crafted and given away more than 14,000 clay cups to spark conversations about war and its consequences. The film also highlights Army veteran Judas Recendez, who lost both legs in Iraq and developed his ceramic practice during rehabilitation; renowned ceramic artist Peter Voulkos, whose art education was made possible through the G.I. Bill; author and artist Pam DeLuco, creator of Paper Dolls: Stories From Women Who Served; and Eugene Burks Jr., a member of the Army’s historic “Old Guard” regiment who crafts leather horse tack for military funeral caissons at Arlington National Cemetery.

The screening is happening on Thursday, June 25, at 6:00 p.m. The event will take place at Hi-Desert Artists Gallery, 55635 Twentynine Palms Highway in Yucca Valley.

Admission is free and open to the public.
