Happy 3rd of July? Yucca Valley considers moving annual fireworks celebration one day earlier
A temporary date change for this year’s Independence Day celebrations could become something more permanent. Recreation Coordinator Tommie Jones presented a recap of the the Town of Yucca Valley’s Independence Day celebration held on July 3rd this year.
It was also held at the Yucca Valley High School (YVHS) Stadium, and coincided with the start of the Yucca Valley Summer Concert Series. The site is temporary for this year as the Yucca Valley Aquatics and Recreation Center (YVARC) is the planned location of Independence Day celebrations moving forward. Jones says that holding it at YVHS cost the town about $14,000 in additional resources as they outsourced the stage-building for the turf field.
The cost of the fireworks show was half-covered by the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians, who contributed $24,000 to the Town for the show.
This year, the fireworks show went off on time and in spectacular fashion at 9:00 pm sharp, and featured a patriotic music background provided by Z107.7. The festivities did a lot to erase the memory of the debacle last year. Fireworks Vendor Pyro Spectaculars failed to launch the show on time in 2025, resulting in an abbreviated show and a lot of disappointed residents.
The Town received a credit for a free fireworks show from the vendor, which they have chosen to keep in their back pocket as this year’s celebration was already budgeted and planned for.
This year celebrations were held on July 3rd — a timing consideration as well as a pyrotechnician shortage caused the date change. Other than some confusion leading up to the event, turnout still appeared to be great leaving the Town Council to consider keeping July 3rd as Yucca Valley night of choice for fireworks.
Councilmember Robert Lombardo spoke first saying the move to July 3rd allowed him to actually participate this year, saying “I think it was good being on the 3rd because it gives you options to be other places. It seems like I always had a family obligation to be somewhere on the 4th and I missed a lot of the activities here in Yucca Valley, and so it was nice to be there for it this time.”
Councilmember Rick Denison agreed, saying that smaller towns like Yucca Valley don’t get access to the same resources as bigger cities, “but on the 3rd, we have a ton of bandwidth to really bring the best show possible. We learned a lot from two years ago, certainly. Next year, it’ll be at the Aquatic Center or Brehm Park, as we call it, and it’ll be on real grass.”
Food and drinks weren’t permitted on the Yucca Valley High School’s field, as sticky drinks and food creates a problem on the artificial turf.
Councilmember Jeff Drozd also said the 3rd of July frees up the town from “competing” with the City of Twentynine Palms’ fireworks celebration, and he also brought up the possibility of using drones for opening celebrations of facilities like the YVARC rather than fireworks. Drones shows have become more popular in recent years, especially as fire dangers persist and accidents happen.
The 3rd of July Celebrations were being held right next to the 5-acre property that lit off on the night of the Yucca Valley High School commencement this past June. That fire was blamed on fireworks that detonated too close to the ground. That evening’s fireworks show was also put on by contracted vendor Pyro Spectaculars.
Councilmember Drozd also said holding it on the 3rd of July would allow folks with sensitive animals to be home with them on the 4th, when many loud and illegal fireworks are used.
Mayor Pro-Tem Jim Schooler says that he’s heard similar feedback about the July 3rd date and said it could be a good setup for the future. He also thanked Miss Yucca Valley and her court who were on the field helping out in the celebrations.
The report was a “file and receive,” meaning that no decisions on drone shows or moving the date would be made that night.
