Five airlifted to Arizona after car fire on Twentynine Palms Highway east of Wonder Valley

A vehicle fire on Twentynine Palms Highway led to five people being airlifted for injuries.

On Sunday (September 6) at around 10:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers and a crew from San Bernardino County Fire responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Twentynine Palms Highway near mile marker 124, between Wonder Valley and Vidal Junction. 

County Fire says that two vehicles were involved in the collision, and they arrived to find a van fully involved with flames. They say the van burned itself out, and did not pose a threat to vegetation. 

County Fire said that five medical helicopters arrived at the scene to transport five injured people to a hospital in Arizona. A sixth person was taken by ambulance to a hospital. County Fire said that they were not aware of any fatalities.

The State Highway was briefly closed in both directions.
