Fatal car fire closes SR-62

State Route 62 was closed this morning due to a fatal traffic collision east of Twentynine Palms.

Preliminary information provided by the California Highway Patrol says that around 8:20 a.m. on Friday morning (May 22), a vehicle rolled over and caught fire on Highway 62 west of Cadiz Road. Preliminary information indicates that one of the vehicles was a hybrid, and it’s lithium battery caught fire with at least one person trapped in the car. Nearby brush also caught fire. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s office responded to the scene at around 10:38 a.m. As of 11 a.m., the CHP has closed both directions of the highway in that area.
