Journalist Steve Brown will present his lecture on a Civil War-era attempt by the U.S. Military to bring camels to the American Southwest. Reporter Jef Harmatz will tell you how to attend this informative event.
The U.S. Army’s “camel corps” was established more than a hundred and fifty years ago as a means to transport supplies across the vast deserts of the Southwest. Much of the information surrounding the development and eventual disbanding of this unusual experiment, including the biography of the army’s legendary camel driver, known only as “Hi Jolly,” has been lost to history until now. Brown has uncovered the details of the camel corps and will present them at this in-person lecture on Friday (December 10) at 7 p.m. at the 29 Palms Historical Society located at 6760 National Drive in Twentynine Palms. The event is part of the Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series, and admission is $5.
