Celebrate California’s Biodiversity this Saturday at the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve

Grab your sketchbook and head down to the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve tomorrow for a relaxing morning of drawing and journaling inspired by the biodiversity of the Mojave desert. The free guided workshop is being led by local Landers artist Aidan Koch. In the workshop, participants will use multi-sensory perception to draw the desert and its living inhabitants, and exercises will focus on non-traditional approaches to observational drawing and are suited to all levels of experience and curiosity.

Materials will be provided, but please bring your favorite drawing materials, binoculars, and a camp chair if you have them. There will be some refreshments, please bring water for yourself for the morning and a cup for coffee or tea. This workshop will be held at one location in the preserve.

California’s Biodiversity Day is held on September 7th but there are events that go through the 13th – including tomorrow’s sketch workshop. 30% of all plant and vertebrate species in the United States live here in California, making it one of the most biodiverse areas in the United States. Since 2018, California Biodiversity Day has brought awareness to the incredible nature of California while advancing the goal of protecting 30% of its lands and coastal waters by 2030.

The workshop is this Saturday (9/12) starting at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until 12:00 noon. The Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is located right off Highway 62 as you enter Morongo Valley. There is plenty of parking, and the event is free.
