Representatives from the Red Brennan Group joined the Z107.7 Up Close Show last Friday (June 11) to continue the debate around Measure “K”. The measure passed with a two-thirds supermajority in 2020 and limited county supervisors to one four-year term and capped their pay at $60,000. Assemblyman Chad Mayes then introduced Assembly Bill 428, in which county supervisor term limits could not be restricted to fewer than two terms and any adjustments to the supervisors’ compensation could only be made by the supervisors themselves. While AB 428 appeared to be going directly against what county voters already approved with Measure K, Assemblyman Mayes came on the Up Close Show to clarify the meaning of the bill. Cassidy Taylor fills us in on the response from the Red Brennan Group…
“We had a little debate on the floor of the assembly just yesterday, and there were a couple of assembly members that had believed that very same thing and I said in my opening statement that this bill is prospective, it means going forward, not retroactive, which means it does not apply to any local initiative that’s already been passed in the state of California.” – Assemblyman, Chad Mayes (from the Up Close Show on May 14).
Assemblyman Mayes says that the bill is prospective, not retroactive, but Natalie Zuk from the Red Brennan Group doesn’t see it that way.
“[Assemblyman Mayes] wants to claim, ‘oh, Measure K won’t apply to it.’ while knowing these supervisors, they’re going to come up with another measure in 2022. They’re going to try and get rid of this again. And I think that is a slap in the face to voters, quite frankly. The fact that we have already passed a similar bill in 2012 with Measure R, and now we have Measure K. How many times are the voters going to have to say, this is what we want? And how many times are they going to try and subvert what we have voted in. It’s just not right.” Natalie Zuk, Red Brennan Group.
