A few weeks ago, Z107.7 News broke the story of an abandoned campsite near Landers’ Giant Rock that was littered with an extraordinary amount of trash, human waste and other debris. In this follow up report, Mike Lipsitz says community response has been enormous…
Following Z107.7’s report on the large-scale mess near Giant Rock, a number of groups and individuals began organizing a major cleanup. Teams from the Landers Association, Mojave Desert Land Trust, and an organization known as Blight Sites coordinated with the Bureau of Land Management and have set September 9 as the big cleanup day. Groups and individuals will check in with the BLM starting at 8 a.m. along the road out to Giant Rock just east of Linn Road and Belfield Boulevard in Landers. Bags, gloves and other equipment will be on-hand; volunteers will be assigned to one of several related cleanup sites. All involved should wear appropriate clothing and bring plenty of drinking water. Those with pickups and trailers are especially encouraged to show up and assist transporting the trash to the Landers Landfill.
The BLM will be recording volunteer hours, assigning a dollar figure and adding it to the mounting fines levied against the known perpetrators.
