On June 5, Yucca Valley residents will be asked to vote on Measure L, a citizens’ initiative that would allow commercial indoor cultivation and processing of cannabis in industrial zones of Yucca Valley and in the Old Town commercial zone. In part 1 of a two-part series yesterday, Managing editor Tami Roleff explored the arguments in favor of the measure. Today in Part 2, she discusses the issues against Measure L…
Opponents of Measure L, which Yucca Valley residents will vote on June 5, say the proposed ordinance does not include any tax revenue for the town of Yucca Valley; that is something that would have to be voted on in the future. Opponents say that cannabis-based businesses lead to increased crime, which will cost the town money for code enforcement, additional law enforcement and unfunded potential liabilities. In addition, opponents say the state has no way to track the sales of marijuana, no way to regulate enforcement, and no way to regulate the quality or strength of the drug. And finally, they point out that the federal government still considers marijuana an illegal drug.
