Yucca Valley residents yesterday defeated an initiative to allow medical marijuana dispensaries in the town. With about one-third of the town’s 9,800 registered voters casting ballots, the final unofficial results are 57 percent against Measure X, with only 43 percent of voters for the proposed ordinance. Only 730 of the more than 3,200 votes were cast at the polls Tuesday; the rest were mail-in ballots. In November, nearly 1,900 residents—more than the votes cast against the proposed ordinance yesterday—signed a petition to change a town ordinance to allow medical marijuana dispensaries. If Measure X had passed yesterday, the proposed ordinance would have allowed one dispensary per 10,000 residents.
