YUCCA VALLEY TRIPLETS MAKE MILITARY HISTORY

A set of Yucca Valley triplets—two girls and a boy—made a bit of military history this week. Reporter David Haldane has the story…

Staff Sergeant Benjamin Shumaker was astounded at what recently walked through the door of the Yucca Valley Army Recruiting Center. For starters,
he’d never seen triplets before. And he’d rarely seen people more qualified to serve.

So this week Joseph, Tanya and Gretchen Szabo, all 17, became what Shumaker believes are the first combat-destined triplets since the Second World War. And Tanya and Gretchen, he says, will likely be the first Hi-Desert women ever to fight.

“They’re going to be phenomenal soldiers. What I see from them is dedication.”

The triplets say they welcome the challenge. “I just want to do something that not everyone can say that they did in their life.”

That’s Tanya who, like her siblings, will soon be leaving for basic training. They don’t know where they’ll end up, or if they’ll be together. But whatever happens, they say, it will be an experience that changes their lives.
