A Yucca Valley man is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that the president’s directive banning transgender people from serving opening in the military is unconstitutional. According to the lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, Aiden Stockman, 20, came out as a transgender male when he was in the eighth grade and began hormone replacement therapy when he was in eleventh grade at Yucca Valley High School. He found a doctor and began his gender reassignment surgery, with plans to enlist in the Air Force afterwards. In his lawsuit, Stockman said he was “crushed” when Donald Trump released his August 25 policy re-instating the ban on transgender people serving openly in the military. Stockman and the other plaintiffs contend that Trump’s policy directive denies them equal protection of the laws, their right to freedom of expression, and their right to liberty and privacy. They are asking the Central District Court of California to declare the directive unconstitutional and enjoin the Trump administration from enforcing the directive. Trump ordered the ban to take effect in February 2018, but Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis announced transgender troops will be allowed to continue serving, pending the release of a study by experts.
