Money was the theme that ran through Tuesday night’s meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council. With Council member Merl Abel absent, the council unanimously approved allocating $80,000 among the Boys & Girls Club ($20,000); the Morongo Basin Youth Soccer Association ($16,000); Hi-Desert Cultural Center ($12,000); Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel/Red Cross Morongo Basin chapter ($12,000); and the Yucca Valley Elks Lodge ($10,000) (with $10,000 left in a contingency fund to be allocated later if necessary). Then Art Miller, president of the Desert Regional Tourism Agency, asked the council to consider allocating the marketing agency the full $96,000 it asked for to cover its annual budget, instead of the $50,000 recommended by town staff. Or, at the very least, to increase the allocation to $65,000. Council members decided to leave the allocation at $50,000 but indicated they would revisit the issue within the next six months. And finally, the Council unanimously approved the purchase of a 10-acre parcel that will provide access to North Park.
In Friday’s news, we’ll hear about plans to widen a portion of Highway 62 to six lanes.
