Yucca Valley’s newest park, the Brehm Sports Park, is scheduled to have its grand opening May 25 for Grubstakes Day events. The park was developed by the Basin Wide Foundation, with the plan to turn it over to the Town for the operation and maintenance of the park. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Town Council, council members heard a proposal for providing long-term maintenance for two parks—the Youth Sports Park, and the soon-to be completed Brehm Sports Park. Despite the fact that the Town bought approximately 10 years’ worth of water in advance, thereby significantly reducing the water costs for the parks, the net annual maintenance costs are estimated at $115,000 for 2013-14, and eventually increasing to more than $200,000. Despite that, the Council agreed 5-0 to accept ownership of the parks. And finally, the Town Council approved $19,500 in partnership funding requests for the 2013-14 budget. Included in those requests are $8000 for the Rotary Club’s annual fireworks show; $2000 for the Festival of Lights; $1500 for the Morongo Basin Tennis Association; $3000 for adult literacy; and $5000 for Morongo Basin Adult Health Services.
