The Yucca Valley Town Council has called a special meeting today. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains why…
Like the Morongo Unified School District and city of Twentynine Palms, the town of Yucca Valley received a letter from attorney Kevin Shenkman in September alleging that the way the town council is elected violates the California Voting Rights Act. Shenkman threatened to sue the town unless it changed to district-based elections. Shenkman has sued many other California cities, and won every case. Last week, the town council decided in closed session to make the change to district-based elections to avoid spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend itself against a lawsuit. At tonight’s special meeting, the council will begin the procedures to establish and implement district elections for council members. The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Cholla Room of the Yucca Valley Community Center.
