The Yucca Valley Town Council took care of some housekeeping matters during its regular meeting last night. It heard a report from the Chamber of Commerce, approved a contract to repave the parking lot for the California Welcome Center, hired a contractor to assist with the red tape involved with Caltrans projects, approved a contract to study staff compensation, and approved the appointment of Planning Commissioner Clint Stoker to the citizens advisory group for the aquatics and recreation center. Sheriff’s Captain Trevis Newport said the county Sheriff’s Department plans to open a behavioral health center in the Morongo Basin in the near future. The details are not all set yet, but he hopes the team of clinicians, nurse practioners, and a psychiatric team will be able to develop a rapport with the homeless population in the Basin, along with veterans. He is also working to open a juvenile court here for juveniles charged with lesser offenses. The Sheriff’s department also received a $100,000 grant for its OHV enforcement program which it plans to use to buy another OHV. Saturday was “clear the shelter” day at the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter, and Assistant Town Manager Shane Stueckle said eight cats and 13 dogs were adopted that day. However, there are still plenty of animals at the shelter waiting to be adopted.
