YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL FUNDS NEW RADIO SYSTEM AND SLURRY SEAL

The Yucca Valley Town Council held one of their shortest meetings in recent history last night. After meeting Miss Yucca Valley Isabella Falossi and her court, the council awarded proclamations in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month and Donate Life Month for organ donation. Managing editor Tami Roleff fills in the highlights of the meeting…

Miss Yucca Valley, Isabella Falossi, and her court address the Yucca Valley Town Council at its meeting Tuesday night.

Shortly after incorporation in 1991, the town of Yucca Valley began using the county’s 800-megahertz radio system to communicate with the Sheriff and Fire Departments as well as county dispatch for emergencies and after hours services. The county has gone to digital radio and no longer allows direct communication with those outside of county services.

So at last night’s meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council, the council voted to award a contract with C&L Service for a new radio system that will be about half the cost of what it was paying to the county. The council also approved a list of roads to undergo slurry seal. Some of the $357,350 in funds for the town’s slurry seal projects come from SB1, which is commonly known as the “gas tax.”

In closed session, council members voted unanimously to defend itself against a lawsuit filed by Rebecca Smithling. In March 2018, Chad Smithling was killed when his motorcycle crashed into an SUV that made an illegal left-hand turn into the AM/PM gas station at Balsa Avenue and Highway 62 in Yucca Valley. A month later, Caltrans installed delineators on the highway to prevent left-hand turns into the AM/PM driveway.
