Prior to last night’s meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council, residents were invited to give their input on what they felt was important for the town at the second of two strategic planning sessions. Most of the 50 residents in attendance said their number one priority was public safety. However, unlike at the first strategic planning meeting at which people preferred a 10-year, half-cent sales tax for police, and infrastructure, about twice as many people favored a 30-year, half-cent sales tax that would go toward the sewer project. Managing editor Tami Roleff has more about the meeting…
The Yucca Valley Town Council members all agreed that public safety and infrastructure were the top priorities, but there was no consensus on what the top two priorities should be after that: recreational programs; culture and arts; code compliance; community planning, building and safety, or animal control. Council members were reminded that without additional revenue, increasing spending for one priority, such as public safety, means that spending must be cut for other town services. Staff will present an overview of the results from the strategic planning session at the council’s November 3 meeting. In other business, the Town Council approved the appointment of 20 youth commissioners and five alternates; approved the early payment of $501,000 toward a CalPERS side fund loan, saving the town about $155,000 in interest payments; and approved a new policy for renting town facilities.
