At yesterday’s special meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council, the council began the process of awarding $5000 grants to local businesses that are being negatively affected by the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the council also heard an update on the effect of the stay-at-home order on the town’s budget…
The Yucca Together Economic Assistance Package will provide up to $5,000 in grants to local businesses to help them with mortgage or lease payments, utilities, insurance, payroll, supplies, and other overhead costs. The town has so far received 15 applications; town staff have rejected two because they didn’t meet the criteria for the grants. The town has set aside up to $250,000 to help businesses that have a physical presence in the town.
In other business, the loss of sales tax from shuttered businesses will cost the town about $681,000 in the final months of this fiscal year. The council was assured that the town has a good reserve balance to help it weather this financial crisis, but the drop in revenue could affect services and personnel in the next fiscal year.
