The Yucca Valley Town Council went ahead with two separate half-percent sales tax measures at last night’s meeting. Managing editor Tami Roleff said the Council also appointed a new Planning Commissioner and heard a member says we would not run for reelection…
At last night’s meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council, the council voted unanimously to place two sales tax measures on the ballot in November. Each half-cent tax is estimated to raise about $15 million over their 10-year terms. The revenue generated from one sales tax measure will go toward hiring more Sheriff’s deputies and improving town roads. This measure would need 50 percent plus one of cast votes to pass. The other sales tax measure would be used to help pay down the Hi-Desert Water District’s loan from the State Revolving Fund loan, which would lower sewer assessments by an estimated 20 to 30 percent for all property owners in all phases of the town. This one would need 66 percent of votes to pass. Both measures would include language that would prevent the state from appropriating the funds. In addition, the council plans to set up a citizen’s oversight committee to oversee how the revenues are spent. In other business, the council unanimously appointed Margie Trandem to the Planning Commission to fill the seat left vacant by Vickie Bridenstine’s resignation earlier this year. And finally, during comments by council members, George Huntington announced he will not be seeking a third term on the town council this fall.
