YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL APPROVES BIRTHDAY PARTY, SETS SPEED LIMITS

The Yucca Valley Town Council met last night. An $8,000 birthday party and speed limits dominated the meeting. Managing Editor Tami Roleff was at that meeting and files this report…

After being reassured by Town staff that most if not all of the $8,000 in costs to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the town’s incorporation would be covered by corporate sponsorships, the Yucca Valley Town Council voted unanimously to approve the celebration. Plans are to celebrate during the July 16 summer concert featuring the local band Desert Sol, with birthday cake, themed decorations, a kids’ play zone, raffles, and complimentary food vouchers. A second celebration will be held in November with a retrospective slide show during the mayor’s State of the Town address. There was much discussion about keeping the speed limit of Black Rock Canyon at 25 miles per hour, even though a traffic survey determined it should be raised to 35 miles per hour. Town staff informed the council that 25 miles per hour was not a “legally defensible speed limit” however, and so the council agreed to raise it, along with the speed limit on Warren Vista from Yucca Trail to Onaga Trail. Sage Avenue from Highway 62 to Sunnyslope will be reduced to 35 miles per hour from 40; all other speed limits will remain the same.

The council also recognized the full- and part-time employees of the year. Andy Romatko has been working part-time in facilities maintenance for about two years, and was described as always smiling, has a positive outlook, and is always willing to help. Robert Adams has been working for the town for 20 years and is currently the street maintenance supervisor. He comes in early and stays late, is ready and willing to help other departments, and is excellent at defusing difficult situations.
