Markina Evdokimoff, a senior at Yucca Valley High School, has been named one of 30 winners of the Southern California Edison STEM scholarships. The $40,000 college scholarship allows students to pursue their dreams in science, technology, engineering, or math. Evdokimoff plans to major in civil engineering. In her application, she said she has developed a fascination for aquaponics.
“Aquaponics is a new energy conserving method of growing food, combining hydroponics and aquaculture to resemble a balanced ecosystem. Fish swim in a tank on the bottom, plants grow in a gravel tank on top. Water is pumped to the upper grow bed and the water drains back down to the fish tank. The result is a smoothly running cycle of life.”
She has successfully designed, planned, and built her own aquaponics garden. Evdokimoff is also on the swim and soccer teams, is president of the environmental club, and vice president of Yucca Valley’s National Honor Society.
