YUCCA VALLEY REQUESTS DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY IN RESPONSE TO ELECTION DEMAND

Like the City of Twentynine Palms and the Morongo Unified School District, and dozens of other government agencies around the state, the Town of Yucca Valley recently received a letter from a Los Angeles lawyer alleging the Town was in violation of the California Voting Rights Act because the town’s council members are “at large” members instead of being elected through town districts. The lawyer contends that at-large elections dilute the votes of minority residents. In response, the town has requested an in-depth study of the town’s demographics, its impact on the outcome of past town council elections, and how to ensure unbiased representation for all voters in the town. Town representatives did not state when the study will be completed and presented to the town council for review.

The Z107.7 Up Close Show will feature an elections expert and representatives from the City of Twentynine Palms and Morongo Unified School District to discuss the at large v. District election issues this morning at 10:00.
