About 10 percent more signatures on recall petitions than were needed were turned in to the Yucca Valley Town Clerk yesterday. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the signatures must first be verified before a recall election is called…
The petitions turned in to the Yucca Valley Town Clerk Tuesday afternoon to recall Council Members Robert Lombardo and George Huntington had about 260 signatures more than what was needed to put the recall on a ballot. State election code requires signatures from 25 percent of the Town’s 9,841 registered voters, (or 2,461), to go forward with a recall election. Town Clerk Lesley Copeland made a cursory review of the petitions and counted 2,720 signatures for the recall of Robert Lombardo and 2,722 signatures for the recall of George Huntington. The petitions will be delivered to the County Registrar of Voters today; the Registrar has until October 23 to verify the signatures. Assuming that the number of signatures remains above the threshold needed, the Yucca Valley Town Council will set a date for the recall election at a regular meeting in November. The election must be held no earlier than 88 days and no later than 125 days from the November council meeting, which would mean the election will be held between late February and late March, 2014.
