After graduating from Yucca Valley High School in 2008 and San Bernardino Valley College in 2011, Michael Murphy joined the Navy but is now fighting a very different battle than he might have first imagined…

A native of Yucca Valley, Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Murphy is fighting the coronavirus on the front lines as a hospital corpsman stationed overseas. Working at the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples in Italy, Murphy’s skills are helping to maintain the health of his fellow sailors during a stressful time of unknowns.

As a histology corpsman, Murphy studies of the microscopic structure of tissues, which is proving to be more valuable amidst a global pandemic than he originally anticipated. Working behind the scenes, Murphy is actively involved in screenings and assisting with crucial medical tasks at a time when manpower is sorely needed.
