A man who didn’t check the chamber of a semi-automatic pistol accidentally shot himself in the leg Saturday. According to a Sheriff’s report, Humberto Soto, 28, of the 7400 block of Borrego Trail in Yucca Valley showed his .380-caliber pistol to his friend, Pedro Fernandez, 26, about 6:15 p.m. The report states Soto thought the pistol was unloaded, but when Fernandez pulled the trigger, he shot himself in the left leg. The bullet went through the leg and stopped in the closet. Fernandez was taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs to be treated for his injuries. Deputies determined the shooting was negligent but not criminal.
