YUCCA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING COACH RESIGNS

Yucca Valley High School wrestling coach Larry Giron submitted his resignation as head coach Wednesday. Giron, who started his coaching career by volunteering with the team for a few hours, became head coach after filling in as coach when the previous head coach left unexpectedly. Giron said that wrestling became an all-consuming passion with him, and he loved seeing how the sport helped the wrestlers build their self-esteem, improve their grades, and become successful adults. However, he said that changes in his business required that he step away from coaching so that he can be a better father and husband. He added that he will continue to coach junior high wrestling and private wrestling teams two days a week.

“Today I voluntarily submitted my resignation as Wrestling Head Coach for Yucca Valley High. I was blessed to be involved with the Yucca Valley Wrestling team from its re-inception in 1989, I wrestled with the team and found much success in high school and beyond. Years later I would come back to Yucca Valley, start a couple businesses and eventually support the program as an alumni. I loved how the Yucca Valley Wrestling program reached levels of success that is well known in Southern California.

“One day I decided to volunteer for a couple hours after watching the wrestling program struggle, those couple hours led to more and more involvement eventually resulting in me filling in as Head Coach when the previous Head Coach left unexpectedly. As many can attest, wrestling has become an all-consuming passion and I have spent countless hours and the last several years dedicated to this sport. I have seen this most difficult sport build self-esteem, improve grades and make confident successful adults.

“This week some changes in my business have revealed that I am severely lacking in time. I have struggled to balance my businesses, family life and volunteer activities with the demands of trying to rebuild a team.

“I believe I have reached my goal of rebuilding the team and setting it up for continued success, I must step away so that I may be a better father and husband, and learn from others. I will continue to coach junior high and private wrestling teams about 2 days a week, I hope to build the future of the program. I leave new equipment, a trained team, a budget and plenty of time for a suitable replacement to be found.

“I thank the administration, volunteers, staff and most especially the wrestlers for all their support and hard work.”
