YUCCA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SHARES THE LOVE

Valentine’s Day is this Sunday and after the year we have had, we all could use a little love and joy. Well, one Yucca Valley student took matters into her own hands and made Valentine’s Day cards addressed to patients at the Hi-Desert Continuing Care Center. Reporter Cassidy Taylor was there and shares this feel-good moment…

So every year my sister and I, and a group of friends we make Valentine cards for the middle schoolers.”

Guinevere Dahlberg is no stranger to acts of kindness, and a pandemic wasn’t going to stop her from doing something for someone else.

I made a little over 100 cards.”

The Yucca Valley High School junior stopped by the Hi-Desert Continuing Care Center Monday to give the cards to patients. Due to pandemic restrictions, the center is modifying visitations so, there to accept the cards was the CEO of Hi-Desert Medical Center, Karen Faulis.

We are honored to accept some cards that one of our local students has put together. And it really gets to [the patients] heart, that people are thinking of them while they’re inside here.”

Faulis says it is easy to follow in Dahlberg’s footsteps.

They could call The Continuing Care Center and ask for our Activities Coordinator and then she would be the one to coordinate all of that.”

Guinevere Dahlberg Transcript:

Every year my sister and I—and a group of friends—we make Valentine cards for the middle schoolers. And this year, unfortunately we weren’t able to do that because of COVID restrictions, but I still wanted to spread some kind of happiness, even if it was through some Valentine cards. And I made a little over 100 cards for the hospital and continuing care center.

I’m actually a twin. So, me and my sister we both go to Yucca High and we have a little group of friends and we like to mess around and help out with like little projects around the community and just have fun spread happiness, even through tough times like these. I think if it makes you smile it’ll probably make somebody else smile so I think you should just pursue whatever makes you happy, because it’ll probably make somebody else’s day.

Karen Faulis Transcript:

We are honored to accept some cards that one of our local students has put together and we’re going to be giving those out to all of the continuing care center residents for Valentine’s Day. She did that on her own, and she contacted us and came up to deliver them and so we’re honored to accept them and, and provide that surprise to our residents on Valentine’s Day this Sunday.

Pre-COVID we probably saw it a little bit more than we are now. I think now that we’re in the COVID pandemic folks are staying away a little bit more. Our visitation is modified. So, I think this is a great way to you know kind of get the connection going again, especially with our community. So, yeah, so, so this is the first time that we have had some something like this happen since COVID.

[If someone else wanted to donate] they could call the continuing care center and ask for our Activities Coordinator, Jasmine. And, then she would be the one to coordinate all of that.

We are open to that and we’ll make sure that it’s a, you know, safe environment for our residents. Typically, they’re very excited. And it really gets to their heart, that people are thinking of them while they’re inside here and, you know, unable to really get out as much as they used to in the past so they’re very excited to get any type of card or any type of an item from the community.
