Paul Russell, a 2017 graduate of Yucca Valley High School, completed his six weeks of Cadet Basic Training last month at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. The initial military training program teaches cadets first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship, and nuclear, biological, and chemical training. Russell began classes at West Point August 20. He plans to graduate in 2022 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Russell took a year off after graduation for a 200-hour drafting internship; he also attended one semester at Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree before heading for West Point.
