A Yucca Valley High School senior made it to the CIF regional tournament for girls’ golf this week. Marissa Lindley qualified for the CIF-Southern Section by participating in the Desert Valley League finals in Big Bear last week. Lindley birdied two of the first three holes in the 36-hole tournament, and ended the day with an 87, a 3-shot lead for the first day. On the second day, she shot an 82.
“We knew she had a shot at winning the tournament, but a 10-shot victory in 36 holes is a dominating performance in any competitive golf tournament,” said head coach Jason Harvey. “After the first round of 87, we thought that just playing to the same number would get it done, but her 82 on day two really separated her from the field. She grew her lead early and was able to play simple golf for most of the back nine and just maintain her lead. It was really fun to watch.”
Her 10-shot victory over the rest of the golfers allowed her to play in the CIF-Southern Section Regionals at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills on Tuesday, where for the second year, Lindley represented the Desert Valley League. However, a couple of tough holes put Lindley out of contention for moving on to the next round.
Lindley said, “It was a great experience. I felt good and gave it all I had out there. I am happy with my success within the girls’ league, but also excited to move on to the spring to help my team win another league championship.”
Lindley plans to play on the boys’ golf team in the spring as they look to repeat their undefeated league championship from last year.
