The Yucca Valley High School baseball team is gearing up for the season. Coach Brian Shoenborn told Z107.7 News that due to new rules that place a limit on the number of pitches a player can throw and that regulate rest days for pitchers, the team is trying to increase the size of its bullpen. Several players are returning this year, including the Trojan’s best hitter last year, junior Anthony Gutierrez. Senior Travis Shartel is showing early homerun hitting power as well as strong command on the mound. Senior Tim Parker is being groomed to be a consistent starter on the mound as well as a powerful closer if need be. A sophomore lefty to watch this year is Eli Lynch. Junior Christian Elias is leading the team in hitting, and looks solid as a starting catcher. Coaches this year are Josh Grisvold with junior varsity, and Robby and Brian Schoenborn for varsity. Both the JV and varsity teams host Cathedral City Saturday at home with a double header. First pitch for both teams is at 10 a.m.
